My Father’s Eyes…

Who doesn’t know this catchy Eric Clapton song from 1998? I use to play this song in my family constellation workshops to help the client to make peace with his father after he has lost the connection to him, often through separation of the parents when he was a child.

Either the situation at that time or one of the parents doesn’t allow for the relationship between the son and the father to continue in a harmonious way. This can cause great suffering in the child, which often turns into anger towards his father in later years.

Finding what mends…

These deep in the soul of the son embedded emotions of anger and judgement against the father can come from an accusation that the father left him or the child takes over the emotion of his mother of anger, grief, hurt, insecurity, or shame when the father left the family.

Most of us want to change something in our lives. Even when we find ourselves in a comfortable situation there is always something that could be better: ‘if only this would happen, then… !’

But have you ever really thought it through, what it is, that you’re longing for and find so hard to get?

Change doesn’t mean to add something new to your life.

I’m going to give it away right now: change will not happen by adding to the ‘things’ you already have in your life, it is to let go of that what is holding you back to make the shift, which is a matter of shifting the perception!

Have you watched the movie: What the Bleep do we Know (2004)?

This main stream introduction into the world of the Unseen Forces which we all use (mostly unconsciously) to create our reality with our thoughts and emotions is worth watching. It covers quantum physics as well as spiritual beingness, and indeed these two aspects of life are going together like a pair of shoes: they take us on the road to creation, and to staying at peace even in challenging times, if that’s where we want to go.

We have to acknowledge that the forces at work to create our reality are not visible to our eyes and cannot be argued with by our mind. So how can we access these forces, what makes them visible and workable for us?

As Einstein is often quoted, our world (including us) is only made out of 2 building blocks, which create all substances: Information and Vibration, or together called: Energy.

Peace is just the beginning part four

In the last blog post we have uncovered the conditioning of the mind, the second mind. There are several methods to write a new program that overrules these conditionings.

A quite common modality is NLP: Neuro-linguistic programming. Another one that is within the scientific standards is CBT: cognitive behavioural therapy. Both working with communication to identify the conditioned behaviour and change it by ‘overwriting’ it with new information. That can be done also by simply practicing ‘positive thinking’.
But all this methods are addressing the mind to overrule mind pattern: they try to get rid of the problem with the help of the problem. Does that sound right?

And exactly here lays the problem: the mind is not willing to get rid of itself.

In the last blog post we found out that even if we desire to be at peace it’s not necessarily happening, because the mind doesn’t cooperate with our intention. Someone else is holding the reins to the mind and wants to create drama in your life over and over again.

So let’s have a closer look at this imposter, who is it, where does it come from and why is it staying with you so closely? It’s going by a lot of different names, I would like to call it the second mind or the conditioned mind.

The second mind

In the first 7 years of your life the mind is in a so-called Theta state, in which it absorbs the signals from the environment without having a filter to decide if that is what you acutally want to live by for the rest of your life or not.

In the last blog post we have discovered that to seek everlasting peace is futile, because such a thing doesn’t exist. So can we still put an end to the dramas in our lives, and to the wars in the world?

YES we can! All you need to do is to observe your mind, be aware when it starts to go at war with the present moment, and pull the plug: sit down and take 3 … yes, now you know it:) – three deep breaths and let peace find you once again. Before you allow your mind to gallop over the meadows with loose reins straight into war with the present moment.

Keep your reins on the mind tight

The next step is to be present and detect when the mind leaves the state of peace and goes back at war to create dramas in your life once again.

  • Having done both group and private Family Constellation sessions online I can say that they are both as effective as sessions in person. To my surprise I found that the group sessions worked even better online. Being alone in my own home was familiar and comfortable. Perhaps I was less self-conscious, or less distracted. Whatever the reason, we were all in agreement that the virtual format was more intense. Both as a character and as a watching participant it was less like a performance and more of a group conversation. More intimate, more of a collaboration in spirit.

    Maia has a flexible attitude of exploration that makes it easy to trust her instincts, and go for the journey, set up for enquiry, being confident that it will always be worth the trip. The resulting resolutions brought powerful and meaningful outcomes in every case.

  • At first I was concerned that online Family Constellation sessions would probably not work well, or at least be considerably less effective than sessions in person with Maia. But what I found was the online group energy was just as strong as before, and my personal experiences were just as insightful and just as healing for me as in previous sessions.   • My first Family Constellation workshop. I can tell Maia is a deeply tuned-in spiritual being, with her feet on the ground and great wisdom to compliment her considerable and lucid intelligence. Friends had recommended Family Constellations as a complimentary modality to the Hakomi psychotherapy I have graduated in, and it seems Maia is one of the most (if not the most) experienced and trained facilitator. It was an intense day! Quite different from anything else I've tried.   • Since beginning family constellation work with Maia, there has been a marked improvement in my family's relationships. This has been experienced not only by myself, but on a wider familial scale. I have watched dynamics slowly and gently change for the better and there is a clear sense of more space and capacity for everyone to move in different, healthier directions and ways of relating. Prior to this work, I was not on speaking terms with any of my immediate family. We struggled to speak without animosity and tension taking over the interaction. It was awful. With this work, we have been able to build our relationships through phone calls, and even had a small visit with one another recently. We enjoyed each other's company and it was the most peaceful interaction we have had in recent memory. On a personal level, I have experienced a greater sense of peace, health and well being. I have watched my brother and father begin to form a bond they struggled to build before, my dad is finally beginning to see possibilities for himself and he is exploring them. My mom is also working on her own personal development in areas she has always wanted to, but felt unable to, while my brother is branching out bravely into areas he never thought possible in his personal and professional life, as am I. This work has been able to free each of us in ways unique to each person, allowing us to delve into areas we want to work on and find forward momentum and progress- whereas before it felt no matter how much therapy or work was done, some things were hidden or muffled and solutions to growth, progress and development, were frustratingly hidden from view or ineffective no matter how much work we each were doing. It feels that now, each individual can bloom and thrive in the unique ways each of us most needed and our entire family unit is becoming healthier as a result. There's still more to do, but I feel we are headed in a wonderful direction with the support Constellation Therapy has offered.
