Healing the Flow of Money with Family Constellations
Money is more than numbers in a bank account. It is a flow, an energy, and — as we often discover in Family Constellation work — it is deeply connected to Love, Belonging, and our Family System.
This shows us that our ability to receive money is not just about working harder or being clever with investments. It is about whether we are fully open to receive life itself — and with it, the flow of resources, opportunities, and prosperity.
Why Money Sometimes Doesn’t Flow
Whether you have money or not, it remains a source of power — but only for those who neither reject it as ‘bad’ nor try to force it. Money flows naturally when we allow it, when we trust that it will be there when truly needed.
Those who value money without clinging to it can let it move freely, away and toward them, like the waves of the ocean rolling onto the beach.
Bert Hellinger used another powerful image to describe this: Those who have a balanced relationship with money leave it on a long leash, like a dog; it will come back even more so when they need it and call for it.
In Family Constellations, financial scarcity is often addressed by the clients. There, it shows, the issue is rarely just about money. Blockages often reveal:
- Unconscious loyalty to a struggling parent or ancestor (“If they suffered with money, how can I allow myself to be wealthy?”).
- Exclusion in the family system, such as a forgotten sibling, grandparent, or victim of injustice. The system compensates, sometimes by restricting prosperity.
- Rejection of the mother’s love, which directly affects our ability to succeed and thrive in the world.
When love does not flow freely between child and parents, money often struggles to flow as well.
Case Study: Opening The Door To Abundance
Anna (name changed), a participant in a Family Constellation VIRTUAL workshop in her mid-thirties, described herself as quite content with her life. She had a loving partner and a fulfilling job. Yet one issue kept troubling her: no matter how hard she worked, money seemed to slip through her fingers.
“It feels like I always hit a wall when I try to save — whether for buying a house, travelling, or even just for nice clothes,” she shared. “I get so frustrated and feel hopeless. It makes me sad, even angry at times.“
I ask Anna to choose representatives for herself, money, and her parents. Very quickly, the picture revealed itself: money stood far away from her, its back turned toward her father. Anna herself could not look at her mother — she carried deep resentment for her mother’s strictness during childhood.
The constellation revealed that money had not been flowing in her paternal lineage. Anna had unconsciously adopted the same pattern. Because she rejected her mother’s love, abundance could not reach her — just as it had not reached her father’s ancestors.
As the process unfolded, it revealed hidden entanglements in the father’s line that prevented abundance from flowing freely. Something shifted. The representative for money, who had until then been motionless and cold, began to move closer — first toward the father, then standing beside him. Anna watched this process with a mix of awe and hesitation.
At a key moment, she was gently guided to turn and face her mother. With support, Anna found the words:
“Now I see you, Mother, and your love for me. I allow myself to open my heart to you and your love. That is all I need, and it is more than enough. I take it all, just as it comes from you.“
A transformation occurred. By the end of the constellation, Anna, her mother, and her father were standing together, facing money, which now looked warm and welcoming towards them. When they reached out their hands, the representative for money stepped joyfully into their circle, as if belonging all along.
In the months that followed, Anna reported a remarkable change: she received a long-awaited promotion, and for the first time in years, she was able to build savings without constant setbacks.
Abundance as a Flow of Love
Hellinger emphasised that money and success are connected to the flow of love from the mother:
When we take our mother fully, success follows.
When we take both parents as they are — without judgement or rejection — we step into the full stream of life. Money, career, and abundance are part of that stream.
