How Family Constellation Can Support Fertility and Parenthood

The desire to have a child is one of the most natural and powerful wishes we can hold. And yet, for many, the path to becoming a parent is not a straightforward one. When pregnancy doesn’t happen—despite readiness, love, medical support, and deep longing—the journey can feel lonely, confusing, and painful.

Medical advances such as IVF, IUI, egg or sperm donation, and surrogacy offer hope to those wishing to start or expand a family. Yet, even with the support of science, emotional and energetic blocks can remain – often deeply rooted in the hidden layers of our Family System.

Beyond the Physical: The Soul of the Family System

In Family Constellation, developed by Bert Hellinger, we recognise that many life challenges — including fertility issues — may not begin with us. They often stem from transgenerational trauma, unresolved grief, or excluded members in the Family System. These hidden loyalties and entanglements can unconsciously affect our bodies, our relationships, and even our ability to conceive or nurture new life.

For example:

  • A woman may carry unconscious guilt from a grandmother who lost a child.
  • A man may feel split between loyalty to his family of origin and starting his own.
  • A previous abortion or miscarriage in the Family System may have been unacknowledged, leaving a ‘missing piece’ in the family soul.

Many of my clients have come to Family Constellation work after years of trying to conceive, through natural means or assisted procedures like IVF. They’ve often tried everything—except this. And yet, for so many, Family Constellation becomes the missing piece.

Why? Because this work doesn’t just address the body—it reaches the soul.

Uncovering Hidden Dynamics

Family Constellation allows us to access the Morphogenetic Field—the deep knowing field of our family system—where unconscious loyalties and entanglements across generations can be seen and released.

Sometimes, infertility or repeated IVF failure is not about biology at all. It can be the soul’s response to unresolved trauma or loss in the family system: a sibling who was lost and never mourned, a grandmother who died in childbirth, an abortion that was never acknowledged, or the hidden grief of a parent. These experiences leave energetic imprints that may unconsciously block life from flowing freely.

My Own Journey

My personal journey into Family Constellation began with the very same wish. Years ago at work in my law office in London, I had a powerful and unexpected encounter during an energy healing session. I was simply seeking relief for a sore back from working too many hours sitting at the desk—yet suddenly, a deep soul cry emerged: a longing for a child I didn’t even know I was holding.

The healer told me: ‘You’ll have a son. I can see him. He’s behind your right shoulder, about 5-7 years old, with blond hair and blue eyes, looking at you patiently. He’s already here, waiting for you to clear the path.’ I was stunned. At the time, I had just started dating my future husband and wasn’t planning to have a child. Years passed, we married, but I never became pregnant. Tests showed nothing wrong, yet nothing happened, even after starting IVF.

Eventually, a friend training in Family Constellation suggested we join a workshop. What did we have to lose? That weekend opened a door I didn’t know existed. Six months later, I was pregnant—with the child I had seen all those years ago. Today, he is a grown, happy young man—with blond hair, blue eyes, and a calm, loving nature.

That experience changed my life. I’ve since helped many others clear the hidden blocks to parenthood—not by replacing medical approaches, but by complementing them at a soul level. Family Constellation can help you:

It feels that now, each individual can bloom and thrive in the unique ways each of us most needed and our entire family unit is becoming healthier as a result. There's still more to do, but I feel we are headed in a wonderful direction with the support Constellation Therapy has offered.

  • Having done both group and private Family Constellation sessions online I can say that they are both as effective as sessions in person. To my surprise I found that the group sessions worked even better online. Being alone in my own home was familiar and comfortable. Perhaps I was less self-conscious, or less distracted. Whatever the reason, we were all in agreement that the virtual format was more intense. Both as a character and as a watching participant it was less like a performance and more of a group conversation. More intimate, more of a collaboration in spirit.

  • At first I was concerned that online Family Constellation sessions would probably not work well, or at least be considerably less effective than sessions in person with Maia. But what I found was the online group energy was just as strong as before, and my personal experiences were just as insightful and just as healing for me as in previous sessions.
